Academy January 2020

December 31, 2019

Welcome back in 2020! We hope everyone had a fabulous and restful break! We are looking forward to a bright start in 2020!

January Reminders

* Scholastic Book Orders Due – 16th * No school – 20th Martin Luther King Jr. Day * In-house Registration – January 27th * Book Reports Due – 30th * Snow Day – Bring your item! – 31st * Community Registration begins – February 3rd

As a reminder, drop-off time is from 8:15 to 8:30 am. We appreciate that your student arrives on time; we begin our work first thing and have so much going on – each minute is important! Pick up time is 2:45 pm-3 pm and 12:15-12:30 pm on Fridays.

We have outdoor recess EVERY day the temperature is above 25 degrees, with some consideration for weather that makes the playground unsafe. Please be sure that your student has snow gear daily! Students without snow pants/boots (when there is snow on the ground) will have limited play choices. Snow/muck boots or athletic shoes are highly recommended for the playground daily! The playground is generally muddy and active play is encouraged and therefore falling and sliding in the mud happens, please be sure your student is dressed for this active and often dirty play! We recommend that the students wear their snow pants or other pants over their school clothes because working in wet muddy clothes when we come back inside is not fun!

What is the matter? Well my scientist, we will be discovering what is matter. Then the month will be wrapping up with some chemical chemistry. There will be an explosion of fun!

Social Studies

January will take us to some of the coldest places on earth- Antarctica and the Arctic! We’ll learn why one of these places is a continent and the other is not. Both places have fascinating animals but, Ms. Christy is, definitely, going to have to get creative with the recipes!

Snow Day & 3rd Annual Toasty Toes

January 31st, if we have snow, we will be taking a walking field trip to Rotary Park for some sledding. Students should bring snow gear and a sled. Then we will return to school for to work on our community service project! This year we will again be making winter warmth packs for local homeless. We are asking students to bring in a specific item as we will be making our packets a little differently this year. You will receive a Brightwheel with your item. Parents are welcome to join us; we will need 2-3 volunteers for sledding and 1-2 for packing our warmth packets.

Book Reports

For our January book reports Academy students will choose a winter, snow, Arctic or Antarctica themed book. If your student has a book at home, they would like to use please be sure to check with the teacher. Book Reports are due January 30th.

Book Order

Each student received a voucher for a free book up to $5 dollars as a gift from your teachers. To use this gift simple chose a book from the January book order packet or online with the classroom code on the packet, write down the book item number on your voucher and return it to school. We are so excited to help you build your library and love of reading!

Special Days

We have several special days on the calendar in January (Mega Math Hour and Reading & Language Buddies). For these events we will be partnering with the older preschool classes to give our students the chance to build confidence, academic skills, and social skills through fun peer to peer learning and teaching. We are excited!
